Description

The Cairn is a light alt-azimuth mount for small refractors, short reflectors, and spotting scopes with a payload of up to 4 kg. It moves in altitude, up and down, and in azimuth, side to side, so you aim it the way you would aim a camera on a tripod. The center-post head is compact, which keeps setup short when you carry the mount to a park, a balcony, or a campsite.

A single fine-adjust rod on the altitude axis lets you nudge the tube up and down without touching the optics. The azimuth axis has no rod, so you turn the head by hand. Tension knobs on both axes set how freely the mount moves. Tighten them for steady views at high power, and loosen them when you want to sweep quickly across a star field or follow a planet across the sky.

The universal dovetail saddle accepts bars up to 40 mm wide, which covers most small refractors and Maksutov-type telescopes. A locking screw holds the bar in place while you loosen the main clamp to rotate the tube, so the optics stay seated. The head weighs 2.5 kg and has a standard 3/8-16 thread underneath for photo tripods.

Telescopes up to about 70 mm in aperture and 1.2 kg work best on the Cairn. Heavier or longer tubes fit within the 4 kg payload but take longer to settle after you focus. As a rule, keep the total load, including a diagonal, eyepiece, and finder, well below the rated payload.

The Cairn has no motors and does not track the sky. At low and medium power that is rarely a problem, because most objects stay in the field for a minute or two. It suits short observing sessions where setup time matters more than tracking.

About this configuration

This listing covers one configuration of the Corvane Cairn alt-az mount, defined by its support, add-on, finish, and edition year. The steel pier raises the mount and leaves more room under the telescope for long refractors and cameras. A pier lets the telescope swing past the meridian without the tube or the camera hitting the legs. No add-on is included, which suits observers who already carry their own cases, bars, and power supplies.

Anodized red parts have the same corrosion resistance as the black finish, in a brighter color. The 2026 edition carries the mechanics over unchanged and updates small parts such as the knobs and covers. The payload rating in the specifications applies to the mount head in every configuration of the Cairn line.
