Description

The Lark 7x50 is a classic Porro-prism binocular with 50 mm objectives and 7x magnification. The combination gives an exit pupil of about 7 mm, which matches the pupil of a young, fully dark-adapted eye and makes the view bright under dark skies.

Low magnification and a wide 6.8-degree true field make the Lark 7x50 easy to hold steady by hand. Star fields along the Milky Way in Cygnus, Sagittarius, and Cassiopeia fill the view, and large targets such as the Pleiades, the Hyades, and the Andromeda Galaxy fit with room to spare. The wide field also helps when you look for comets or follow a satellite pass.

The BaK-4 prisms give round exit pupils without the grey edges of cheaper glass, and the lenses are multi-coated on the main surfaces. The long 22 mm eye relief lets you keep your glasses on and still see the full field, which many observers with astigmatism prefer.

At 950 g, the Lark 7x50 is comfortable for short sessions by hand. For longer sessions, lie back in a reclining chair or rest your elbows on a wall or a car roof. The central focus wheel and right-eye diopter adjust smoothly, and the rubber eyecups fold down for use with glasses.

Older observers often have a maximum pupil size of 5 mm or less, so part of the 7 mm exit pupil goes unused. In that case a 10x50 gives a darker sky background at a similar brightness of stars. The 7x50 still offers the widest field and the steadiest hand-held view in this line.

For a first night out, start with the Moon a few days after new, then sweep along the Milky Way from Cygnus to Cassiopeia. Note which clusters you can see, and return to them on a darker night to compare.

About this configuration

All configurations of the Corvane Lark 7x50 binoculars share the same magnification and objective size; the options below change the package and finish. The parallelogram mount keeps the binoculars at eye level while you move them across the sky in smooth arcs. A parallelogram mount lets observers of different heights share the same view without aiming the binoculars again. The multi-coated version suits casual scanning of the night sky as well as daytime nature viewing.

The tan armor is easy to spot when you set the binoculars down on the grass in the dark. The 2025 edition keeps the same optical figures as the earlier years of the Lark line. Compare the exit pupil in the specifications with your sky conditions and your age, since both affect how bright the view looks.
