Description
The Sedge 20x41 binoculars pair 20x magnification with 41 mm objectives, which gives an exit pupil of about 2.1 mm. The true field of 2.8 degrees produces an apparent field of about 56 degrees, so the view stays wide enough to locate targets from a star chart. At this magnification, small movements of the hands show as a shaking image, so most observers use a tripod or a parallelogram mount instead of holding the binoculars by hand.
Before the first session, set the interpupillary distance and focus on a distant object in daylight. After dark, begin with the Moon near the terminator, where crater rims cast long shadows across the surface. Next, move to the Beehive Cluster in Cancer and the Double Cluster in Perseus, both of which fit within the field. Allow your eyes ten to fifteen minutes to adjust to the dark before judging faint detail. The 15 mm eye relief lets observers who wear glasses see the full field, and the rubber eyecups fold down for that use.
At 1,150 g, these binoculars are too heavy for steady hand-held use over long periods. Mount them on a tripod or a parallelogram harness rated for at least 1.5 kg, and carry them by the body rather than the central hinge. Allow the binoculars to reach the air temperature before use, since condensation on cold lenses reduces contrast. The 10.0 m close focus lets you check focus on nearby objects in daylight before dark. The binoculars are not sealed, so keep the objective caps on between sessions and store them in the soft case to limit dust on the prisms and lens surfaces. Clean the lenses with the supplied cloth only.
About this configuration
The Corvane Sedge 20x41 binoculars comes in several configurations, and the notes below explain what this particular combination includes. The included tripod adapter lets you fix the binoculars to a photo tripod for steadier, more relaxed views. With the adapter on a tripod, hand shake disappears, which makes faint stars and close double stars easier to see. ED glass reduces the color fringing that otherwise appears around bright objects such as the Moon and Venus.
Olive rubber armor offers the same protection as the black version in a different color. The optics in the 2024 edition match the other years; the changes concern handling details only. The magnification, field, and exit pupil figures in the specifications table apply to every configuration of the Sedge line.
