Description

The Fjord 10x56 is a large roof-prism binocular with 56 mm objectives and 10x magnification. It is built for twilight and night use, with a sealed, argon-purged body and lenses chosen for high transmission and contrast.

The 5.6 mm exit pupil gives a bright view under dark skies while keeping the background darker than a 7x50. The 5.9-degree true field shows wide star fields, and the 10x magnification resolves many open clusters, such as M35 and M38, into individual stars. Galaxies such as M81 and M82 appear in the same field, and the Andromeda Galaxy shows its two bright companions.

The roof prisms have a phase-correction coating and a dielectric mirror coating on the reflecting surface, which together keep the image sharp and bright. Stars stay sharp across most of the field, with only slight softening at the very edge. The body is armored and the focus mechanism runs smoothly at low temperatures.

At 1,250 g, the Fjord 10x56 is heavier than an 8x42 but still comfortable for hand-held use in short sessions. For longer sessions, a tripod adapter fits the socket under the front cover. The twist-up eyecups have four positions, and the 18 mm eye relief suits most glasses wearers.

The argon filling resists fogging when you move from a warm room into a cold night. The Fjord 10x56 suits observers who want one high-quality binocular for dark-sky trips and daytime use at dawn and dusk.

For daytime use, the Fjord 10x56 gives bright views in forests and at dusk, when wildlife is most active. The same optical qualities that help with stars, high contrast and low scattered light, show up in shaded landscapes.

About this configuration

This listing covers one configuration of the Northmere Fjord 10x56 binoculars, defined by its package, optical coatings, armor color, and edition year. Binoculars alone suit hand-held scanning of the Milky Way, bright star clusters, and the phases of the Moon. If you later want steadier views, the tripod socket between the barrels accepts a standard L-shaped adapter. The multi-coated version suits casual scanning of the night sky as well as daytime nature viewing.

The slate gray finish makes the binoculars easier to find on a dark table than the black armor does. The 2023 edition uses the same prisms and objectives as later years, with small differences in the eyecups. Compare the exit pupil in the specifications with your sky conditions and your age, since both affect how bright the view looks.
