Description
The Skerry 10x38 ED binoculars pair 38 mm objectives with 10x magnification and a 6.0-degree true field, giving an apparent field of about 60 degrees. The 3.8 mm exit pupil suits observers whose dark-adapted pupil is 4 mm or larger, and it keeps the view bright enough for the Double Cluster in Perseus, the Pleiades, and the Hyades. At 790 g, the binoculars are light enough to hold by hand for short sessions.
Extra-low-dispersion glass in the objectives reduces colour fringing around bright stars such as Vega, Capella, and Arcturus, so the edges of the field stay neutral in colour. Multi-coated lenses and prisms raise light transmission, which helps you compare faint open clusters such as M35 in Gemini and M44 in Cancer against the surrounding Milky Way. Star-hopping along the summer Milky Way from Sagittarius to Cygnus is a practical way to learn the sky with this instrument.
Nitrogen-filled, sealed bodies keep the optics free of internal fogging when you move between warm rooms and cold night air. The focus wheel is central, and the right-eye diopter adjusts independently of the focus. Rubber eyecups fold down for use with glasses, and the 16 mm eye relief keeps the full field in view with eyeglasses in place. The close focus distance of 2.0 metres allows daytime viewing of birds and terrestrial subjects.
Rest your elbows on a fence rail or a car roof to reduce hand tremor, or lie back in a reclining chair for longer sessions. Avoid holding the binoculars by the barrels, because pressure there can shift the alignment. Store the binoculars in the soft case with the objective caps fitted, and clean the lens surfaces with the supplied cloth only after removing loose dust with a blower.
About this configuration
This listing covers one configuration of the Northmere Skerry 10x38 ED binoculars, defined by its package, optical coatings, armor color, and edition year. Binoculars alone suit hand-held scanning of the Milky Way, bright star clusters, and the phases of the Moon. If you later want steadier views, the tripod socket between the barrels accepts a standard L-shaped adapter. ED glass reduces the color fringing that otherwise appears around bright objects such as the Moon and Venus.
The tan armor is easy to spot when you set the binoculars down on the grass in the dark. This is the 2025 edition, which added a firmer diopter lock so the setting holds when you pass the binoculars around. Compare the exit pupil in the specifications with your sky conditions and your age, since both affect how bright the view looks.
