Description

The Fenwick 14 mm is a four-element Plössl eyepiece with a 50-degree apparent field and a 1.25 in barrel. It falls in the middle of the focal range, where it covers a wide set of deep-sky objects and planetary detail in most amateur telescopes. Once a low-power wide-field eyepiece is in place, this model can serve as a general-purpose eyepiece.

A 14 mm eyepiece gives moderate magnification: 71x in a 1,000 mm refractor, 86x in a 1,200 mm Dobsonian, and 143x in a 2,000 mm Schmidt-Cassegrain. In the 1,200 mm telescope, the 12.2 mm field stop sets a true field of about 0.58 degrees, enough to frame a globular cluster such as M13 with room around the edges. At these magnifications, your telescope's tracking and the steadiness of the air will affect the image more than they do at lower power.

The Plössl design uses two pairs of cemented lenses facing each other. It gives sharp stars across most of the field in telescopes slower than about f/6, with some softening at the edge in faster reflectors. All lens surfaces are fully multi-coated, and the barrel interior is blackened to reduce internal reflections that lower contrast on bright targets.

With 16 mm of eye relief, the Fenwick 14 mm suits many observers who wear glasses. Fold the rubber eyecup down to make room for eyeglasses, or fold it up to block stray light. The barrel is threaded for standard 1.25 in filters, so you can add a moon filter or a light-pollution filter without an adapter.

About this configuration

All configurations of the Quillon Fenwick 14 mm Plössl eyepiece share the same optical design; the options change the eyecup, the case, and the finish. The soft pouch keeps dust off the eyepiece and fits in a jacket pocket during a session. A soft pouch protects the lenses from scratches when you carry the eyepiece between the car and the telescope. A fold-down eyecup is simple and has no moving parts that can loosen in cold weather.

The titanium gray finish has a hard anodized layer that resists wear from repeated insertion into focusers. This is the 2024 edition, which revised the undercut on the barrel and the grip rings of the Fenwick line. Check the barrel size in the specifications against your focuser or star diagonal before you choose a configuration.
