Description

The Pennant 10x50 is a roof-prism binocular with 50 mm objectives and 10x magnification. The 5 mm exit pupil matches the dark-adapted pupil of many adult observers, so the view stays bright while the magnification separates close pairs and shows the larger star clusters clearly. The 6.0-degree true field gives an apparent field of 60 degrees, which keeps a wide sweep of the Milky Way in view. Exit pupil and field size together set the balance between brightness and sweep speed.

The 10x50 suits targets that reward steady magnification, including the Double Cluster in Perseus, the Beehive in Cancer, the Pleiades, and the globular cluster M13 in Hercules. At 880 g the binoculars show small hand movements at this power, so brace your elbows against your chest or rest them on a wall or car roof. Sweep slowly along the Milky Way from Cygnus toward Cassiopeia, and note which clusters resolve into individual stars.

The BaK-4 roof prisms are phase-corrected and fully multi-coated, which keeps star images sharp toward the edge of the field. The 15 mm eye relief lets you keep eyeglasses on, though observers with deep eye sockets may need to fold the eyecups down to see the full field. The central focus wheel moves smoothly, and the right-eye diopter compensates for differences between your two eyes.

The body is nitrogen-purged and sealed against moisture, so you can use it on damp nights and in cold air without internal fogging. The 3.5 m close focus lets you view nearby terrestrial subjects as well as the Moon, which shows crater detail along the terminator at 10x. Store the binoculars in the soft case with the caps fitted to keep the lenses free of dust.

About this configuration

All configurations of the Quillon Pennant 10x50 binoculars share the same magnification and objective size; the options below change the package and finish. Binoculars alone suit hand-held scanning of the Milky Way, bright star clusters, and the phases of the Moon. If you later want steadier views, the tripod socket between the barrels accepts a standard L-shaped adapter. The ED version adds low-dispersion glass and full multi-coating for sharper star images toward the edge of the field.

The tan armor is easy to spot when you set the binoculars down on the grass in the dark. The optics in the 2024 edition match the other years; the changes concern handling details only. Compare the exit pupil in the specifications with your sky conditions and your age, since both affect how bright the view looks.
