Description
The Vista 8 mm is a seven-element eyepiece with a 60-degree apparent field, 20 mm of eye relief, and a 1.25 in barrel. The Vista line keeps the same long eye relief across all focal lengths, so observers with glasses can use high magnification comfortably.
In a 1,200 mm Dobsonian, the Vista 8 mm gives 150x and a true field of about 0.4 degrees. In a 900 mm reflector it gives 113x, and in a 714 mm refractor about 89x. That range covers planetary detail, lunar features, close double stars, and the brighter planetary nebulae.
Long eye relief at a short focal length requires a more complex design. The Vista 8 mm uses a negative lens group at the bottom of the barrel to lengthen the eye relief, followed by a positive group that flattens the field. Stars stay sharp to near the edge in telescopes of f/5 and slower.
The twist-up eyecup has three positions, which sets your eye at the right distance with or without glasses. The lenses are fully multi-coated, and the barrel has a filter thread for 1.25 in filters.
Because the eye relief is generous, you may need to hold your eye back a little to see the whole field. Raising the eyecup to its top position helps you find the right place quickly in the dark.
The Vista 8 mm works well as the high-power eyepiece in a set with the Vista 15 mm and a low-power wide-field eyepiece. Together they cover most magnifications that typical telescopes and sky conditions support.
About this configuration
All configurations of the Quillon Vista 8 mm eyepiece share the same optical design; the options change the eyecup, the case, and the finish. This configuration comes without a case, which suits observers who keep their eyepieces in a shared foam box. No case is included, so the eyepiece ships in a simple box with its two dust caps fitted. The winged eyeguard wraps around the side of your eye and blocks light from nearby houses and streetlights.
The titanium gray finish has a hard anodized layer that resists wear from repeated insertion into focusers. The optics in the 2024 edition match the other years; the changes concern the housing only. To find the magnification, divide the focal length of your telescope by the eyepiece focal length in the specifications.
