Description
The Wren 7x35 is a Porro-prism binocular with 35 mm objectives and 7x magnification. Its 9-degree true field is very wide, which makes it a good binocular for sweeping large areas of the sky and for learning the constellations.
With 7x magnification and a 5 mm exit pupil, the Wren 7x35 gives a bright, steady view by hand. The whole of the Orion belt and sword region fits in one field, and so does the Coathanger asterism in Vulpecula. The Andromeda Galaxy shows as an elongated glow, and the brighter open clusters along the Milky Way stand out from the star fields around them.
The Porro-prism design gives a slightly wider spacing of the objectives than a roof-prism binocular, which adds some depth to daytime views. The BaK-4 prisms show round exit pupils, and the optics are multi-coated on the main surfaces. The body is splash-resistant but not fully sealed, so keep it dry and let it warm up indoors before you put it away.
At 600 g, the Wren 7x35 is easy to carry and to hand around at an outreach event. The 15 mm eye relief suits observers without glasses and some glasses wearers. The focus wheel moves both sides, and the right eyepiece has a diopter ring.
The smaller objectives collect less light than a 50 mm binocular, so faint galaxies and nebulae are harder to see. As a first binocular for star-hopping practice, or as a wide-field companion to a telescope, the Wren 7x35 is practical and simple to use.
The Porro design also keeps the price moderate for the optical quality. If you later add a larger binocular or a telescope, the Wren 7x35 remains useful as a quick-look instrument for checking sky conditions before a session.
About this configuration
The Quillon Wren 7x35 binoculars comes in several configurations, and the notes below explain what this particular combination includes. The parallelogram mount keeps the binoculars at eye level while you move them across the sky in smooth arcs. A parallelogram mount lets observers of different heights share the same view without aiming the binoculars again. ED glass reduces the color fringing that otherwise appears around bright objects such as the Moon and Venus.
Slate gray armor uses a slightly harder rubber compound that resists scuffs from tripod clamps and cases. This is the 2025 edition, which added a firmer diopter lock so the setting holds when you pass the binoculars around. Compare the exit pupil in the specifications with your sky conditions and your age, since both affect how bright the view looks.
