Description
The Wren 8x32 is a compact roof-prism binocular with 32 mm objectives and 8x magnification. At 520 g, it is light enough to carry on every walk, so it is often the binocular that is at hand when something interesting appears in the sky.
The 8-degree true field is wide for an 8x binocular, which makes the Wren 8x32 easy to aim. It frames the whole of the Pleiades with space around it, shows the Hyades as a V of bright stars, and follows the Moon across the sky with steady hands. Bright comets and conjunctions of planets are good targets, as are the brighter open clusters along the winter Milky Way.
The 4 mm exit pupil gives a bright view at dusk and under suburban skies, where larger exit pupils mostly brighten the background. Under dark skies the smaller objectives show fewer faint stars than a 50 mm binocular, so the Wren 8x32 works best as a travel and daytime binocular that also does useful astronomy.
The BaK-4 roof prisms carry a phase-correction coating, and the sealed body is nitrogen-purged to prevent internal fogging. The close focus of 1.8 m suits butterflies and garden birds during the day. Twist-up eyecups and 16 mm of eye relief work for most glasses wearers.
For longer sessions, the small size makes the Wren 8x32 easy to brace against a fence post or a window frame. A tripod adapter fits under the front cover, although most owners use it by hand.
Because it is small and sealed, the Wren 8x32 also suits travel to dark-sky sites in different climates. It handles humid coastal nights and dry mountain air alike, and it packs next to a camera without adding much weight.
About this configuration
The Quillon Wren 8x32 binoculars comes in several configurations, and the notes below explain what this particular combination includes. The included tripod adapter lets you fix the binoculars to a photo tripod for steadier, more relaxed views. With the adapter on a tripod, hand shake disappears, which makes faint stars and close double stars easier to see. Fully multi-coated optics treat every air-to-glass surface, which raises light transmission and image contrast.
The tan armor is easy to spot when you set the binoculars down on the grass in the dark. This is the 2023 edition of the Wren line, the earliest version that is still listed in the catalog. Compare the exit pupil in the specifications with your sky conditions and your age, since both affect how bright the view looks.
