Description
The Kiln 180 Dobsonian is a 180 mm Newtonian reflector mounted on a Dobsonian base. Its parabolic primary mirror has a focal ratio of f/5, which gives a focal length of 900 mm. At this ratio, the telescope gathers enough light for a wide range of deep-sky objects and still delivers moderate to high magnification on the Moon and planets with suitable eyepieces. Because the tube has no lens elements, the full aperture goes to light gathering. You can expect bright galaxies such as M81 and M82 to show more detail than in a 130 mm instrument, and globular clusters such as M13 to resolve into individual stars along their edges under dark skies.
The tube sits in a ground-plane base with an altitude bearing and an azimuth bearing, so you can set it on any flat surface outdoors. The tube weighs 14.5 kg. It takes a few minutes to load and carry, but the base lets one adult move the instrument between locations. The primary and secondary mirrors need collimation before the first session and after each transport. The supplied collimation cap and the center mark on the secondary holder help you align the optics, and the process takes a few minutes with practice. The 2 in rack-and-pinion focuser holds a heavy eyepiece steady at high power.
A 9x50 right-angle finder mounts on the tube and shows the same sky region as the main eyepiece. Start with a 25 mm eyepiece at about 36x for a wide view, then move to a shorter focal length for lunar and planetary work. Under light-polluted skies, the 180 mm aperture still shows the brightest nebulae and star clusters, although fainter objects benefit from a dark site. Allow the mirror to reach the outdoor temperature before observing, which typically takes 30 to 60 minutes after you carry the telescope out of a warm room.
About this configuration
Every configuration of the Varrow Kiln 180 Dobsonian shares the same optics; the choices below change how the telescope is mounted, finished, and equipped. The Dobsonian rocker base keeps the telescope low and stable, and you aim it by pushing the tube gently by hand. A Dobsonian base needs no alignment, so you can set it on level ground and start observing within a few minutes. The matte black finish hides scuffs and keeps reflections from porch lights and streetlights to a minimum.
With the imaging kit, a camera attaches at prime focus, so the telescope works as a long telephoto lens. The 2025 edition keeps the same optical figures as the earlier years of the Kiln line. The optical figures in the specifications table apply to this configuration and to every other version of the Varrow Kiln 180 Dobsonian.
